Board Approved Supervisor Training – The Full Package

Psychologists who wish to provide supervision to provisional psychologists, registrars and higher degree placement students, must complete the required training to be a Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA)-approved supervisor. This training consists of three components completed sequentially (Part 1, Part 2 & Part 3). Once all three components are successfully completed, participants can apply to be accredited as a PsyBA approved supervisor, effective for 5 years.

The Talbot Centre offers the full 3-part Board-approved Supervisor Training Course. Details about what is involved in in each part are listed below.

Part 1: Knowledge assessment. Part 1 is a self-directed learning component that is delivered online. The online learning component is broken up into 6 modules which map on to the 6 core competencies for supervision.

The information in each module is delivered via a combination of written text and videos. Each module also has required and recommended readings and self-reflection tasks which are essential preparation for the part 2 all day workshops.

Part 1 will take approximately 8-10 hours to complete. Participants can work at their own pace. There will be a 50 question multiple choice quiz at the completion of Part 1. An 85% pass rate is required to move on to Part 2. Participants can have up to 3 attempts at the quiz. Access to Part 1 will be available from the start of August 2024.

Part 2: Skills Training Workshop. The focus of Part 2 is on the development of supervision skills applicable to all supervisee pathways, including practical skills for evaluating competencies and developing reflective supervision practice.

The skills training will comprise 12 hours of direct training over a two-day workshop, focused on integrating knowledge and practice. The training will focus on live practice of supervision skills, immediate trainer and peer feedback, and peer interaction and sharing of experience. In vivo demonstrations and roles plays are used to consolidate learning and build participants confidence to apply supervision skills.

Part 3: Competency-based assessment and evaluation. On completion of the on-line component of training and the two-day workshop participants will be required to submit an electronic video recording of an example supervision session and an accompanying analysis of the session demonstrating the 6 supervisor competencies and a reflective response (maximum 1500-word critique analyzing how you have met the core competencies and what could have been improved on or done differently).

Eligibility: You are encouraged to carefully consult the PsyBA Supervisor Training requirements and FAQs prior to enrolling in this course.

You can enrol in and commence the full training program once you have held general registration (or equivalent overseas registration) for at least 2.5 years. This is because before applying to become a Board-approved supervisor you will need to have held general registration for at least 3 years.

In order to be a principal supervisor of a psychologist in a registrar program you will need to hold an endorsement in the relevant area of practice for at least two years.

Venue Information for Part 2 – Online

As this is an online workshop, delivered live, you can complete the workshop from any location where you have access to a computer and a strong internet signal. The workshop will be delivered via Zoom and participants will be sent a url to join the group as well as information on trouble shooting technical issues, prior to workshop commencement. As the workshop has a strong practical focus live attendance is required (i.e., watching the recordings is not a suitable substitute for live attendance).

Event time: September 16 and 17, 2024 OR November 14 and 15 9.30am – 4.30pm

Times listed are in AEST.
