This one-day course aims to provide Board Approved Supervisors with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively supervise early career psychologists. Upon completion, attendees will have developed six core competencies to enhance their supervisory practice.

After completing this one-day workshop participants will be able to confidently:

  • Navigate the supervisory relationship, with a focus on building trust, facilitating supervisee disclosure and navigating challenges in the relationship
  • Provide feedback and manage the evaluative component of the supervisory relationship
  • Implement processes for supporting supervisees who are not progressing as expected
  • Assist supervisees to develop advanced case formulation skills for a wide range of presenting concerns and modalities of treatment
  • Assist supervisees to develop a strong and beneficial professional identity and to manage feelings of imposter syndrome
  • Support supervisees to develop reflective practice skills and support supervisees to manage transference and countertransference responses
  • Create structure and awareness for supervisees in creating sustainable work patterns and reducing the risk of burnout

Approach: This workshop is designed to provide a safe, open and reflective space for supervisors supporting early career psychologists. This workshop is designed to be focused on practical applications of the theory and will have an active, practice-based approach to learning with strong participant involvement including the use of discussions, case studies, role plays, and small group practice activities. Pre-reading will also be recommended. Numbers will be capped to ensure that a practical skill-development focus can be maintained.

Target Audience: This workshop will be relevant to board approved supervisors who are interested in enhancing their skills in working with early career psychologists completing student placements, internships or registrar programs. Supervisors who want to extend their skills in supporting supervisees with developing sustainable practice, case formulation skills, self-reflective practice and professional identity may also find the workshop beneficial. This workshop meets the requirements of a Masterclass for Board Approved Supervisors who wish to renew their registration as a supervisor with AHPRA. Clinicians who would like to become Board Approved Supervisors should complete the Introductory 3-Part Board Approved Supervisor Training.

CPD: A certificate will be issued to all attendees to allow 6 CPD hours to be claimed. This certificate will also allow current AHPRA Board Approved Supervisors to renew their Board Approved status for another 5 years (participants will need to submit the certificate to AHPRA post completion of the Masterclass).
