Mental health centred on you and your family

While traditional mental health care focusses on the alleviation of distress and negative symptoms, here at The Talbot Centre we direct our efforts into practices shown to promote wellness and walk with you as you seek to maintain your best health at all stages of your health journey.

By tailoring a range of evidence-based strategies we help individuals and families better recognise and manage their feelings, reactions, and behaviours.

Here at The Talbot Centre we help people like you learn new skills, develop a better understanding of yourself and/or your child, and build the foundations needed to experience a more robust and authentic way of living.

We create space for you

We’re like a guide, a coach or a facilitator. We join our expertise to yours and help you create the change you and your family seek for your future. Our role is to:
  • See and understand you or your child as a whole person, not a collection of symptoms or a condition.
  • Consider your broader context (family, work, school and social) and how it affects you or your child.
  • Create a safe space for you to explore your challenges without judgement.
  • Share our expertise in evidence-based psychological therapy.
  • Believe in your capacity, helping you or your child develop new skills or harness your resources to achieve your goals.
  • Maintain hope that things can be better than they are right now.
  • Help you understand yourself better and become the person you want to be.
  • Partner with you and/or your family, walking alongside you to assist you on your recovery and wellbeing journey.

By treating mind and body as one we help develop a whole-person, You-centred Care Plan built around your specific needs and goals.

Space For You

Our treatment approaches

Our clinicians are trained in a wide range of therapy modalities and select the best option for you based on:
  • What the research shows to be effective.
  • Clinical judgement and experience.
  • Your particular goals and preferences.
Some of the treatment models used at The Talbot Centre
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Schema Therapy
  • Family Systems Therapy/Maudsley Family Based Therapy
  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)/Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT)
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Psychodynamic approaches
  • Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM)

What actually happens in therapy?

We understand that each person, family or child is unique. That’s why we spend time getting to know you and identifying the strengths you already have which will help you achieve your therapy goals.

We’ll ask about your:
  • Reasons for coming to therapy.
  • Challenges and goals.
  • Relationships.
  • Work or school.

When working with families, we value your child’s input and work hard to find practical solutions that are workable and acceptable for all family members.

As you share your story with us, we will develop a shared understanding of what has led to your current challenges and what is keeping you stuck. We will then share a proposed treatment plan with you that will help you to begin making some changes to create the life you and your family want.
